Type K thermocouples are interchangeable and independent of maker and model as long as input ports are compatible. Type K thermocouples can be used for temperatures ranging from: -40 to 1380 degrees F. This is based on the bimetal nature of contact surfaces, specifically the electrical voltage across the 2 metal surfaces. The voltage of these surfaces varies operating temperature. There are other kinds of thermocouples available for different temperature ranges.
Q: what is the temperature range for your thermocouples?
A: If the insulation material is not considered, the temperature range will be the same as any Type K thermocouple: -40 to 1380 degree F. However, different makers use different materials in the wires as insulation. Our thermocouples use materials that may melt at 750 degree F. We do not recommend using our thermocouples above 700 degree F. Special thermocouples, with silicone as insulation and stainless steel shields are available on the market. Consult with omega.com if you need special use thermocouples.
Q: Do I need to calibrate the thermocouples?
A: Generally, speaking, no. the thermocouples are interchangeable without any calibration for your instrument. Our meters, that takes the Type K thermocouple as input, are calibrated at factory with boiling water. For HVAC jobs, this temperature is closer to AC systems operation temperature. DO not try to re-calibrate the temperature with ice-water, unless you are using your meter for temperatures in this range most of the time.
Q: Can I use the thermocouple on my Fluke/Amprobe meter/other equipment?
A: Yes, absolutely. if they take the the mini-plug input (model T6) or use the tester ports as input(banana plugs, model T7). Some models of these makers use an adaptor to take input from mini plug thermocouples, these models of meter will take banana plug (T7) input directly without the use of the thermocouple adapter.
